Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
